It really could be me…And Was!

Posted on May 10, 2025May 15, 2025 by Boluwatife

“Could never be me” – whew chile! Well, it was. More than once, actually.

This is that thing we often say when we’re judging someone else’s situation from a safe distance. Scrolling past those wild Twitter threads or listening to a friend’s story and feeling that quiet superiority bubble up. I’d never tolerate that. I’d never go back. I’d never be that naive. Welp! Well, here we are and we’ve been and done all of those things. Maybe even more. We stayed too long. We ignored the signs. We hoped if we showed them enough love, they’d love us in return. We gave chances because we were afraid of starting over.

Turns out, “Could never be me” is sometimes just “Hasn’t been me yet”. . .

But here’s the good news — there’s power in owning it. There’s healing in telling the truth, even if it makes you cringe a little. Because denying your past doesn’t protect you from it — it just keeps you stuck in it. When we stop pretending we were above the mistake, the situationship, the begging-for-closure moment, we actually start to overcome it. We stop running from the version of ourselves we regret being… and we start learning from them instead.

That’s what this space is really about. Not just laughing at the regrettable decisions we made in the name of love, but humbling ourselves enough to admit we did them. To hold our stories without shame. To say, “Yeah, that was me… and I’ve grown.”

So the next time you hear a story that makes you want to say “Could never be me,” pause. Give grace.
Because maybe it hasn’t been you yet, or maybe it was… and it’s time to forgive yourself for it.

Got your own ‘Could Never Be Me’ moment? We all do. And we’d love to hear yours — not to judge, but to reflect, laugh, and grow together. Submit your story here or email us at [email protected].

Humility is healing and you admitting yours might just help someone else face theirs.
